The iron K α Compton Shoulder in transmitted and reflected spectra Giorgio Matt

چکیده

We calculate the Equivalent Widht of the Core and the centroid energy and relative flux of the 1st order Compton Shoulder of the iron Kα emission line from neutral matter. The calculations are performed with Monte Carlo simulations. We explore a large range of column densities for both transmitted and reflected spectra, and study the dependence on the iron abundance. The Compton Shoulder is now becoming observable in many objects thanks to the improved sensitivity and/or energy resolution of XMM–Newton and Chandra satellites, and the present work aims to provide a tool to derive informations on the geometry and element abundances of the line emitting matter from Compton Shoulder measurements.

Models of the iron Kα fluorescence line and the Compton shoulder in irradiated accretion disk spectra

We present a full set of model atmosphere equations for the accretion disk around a supermassive black hole irradiated by hard X-ray lamp of power-law spectral distribution. Model equations allow for multiple Compton scattering of radiation on free electrons, and for large relative photon-electron energy exchange at the time of scattering. We present spectra in specific intensities integrated o...

Iron and Nickel line properties in the X–ray reflecting region of the Circinus Galaxy

We discuss the iron and nickel properties in the nuclear X-ray reflecting region of the Circinus Galaxy, studied with XMM-Newton. The main results are: a) from the depth of the Fe Kα edge, a value of AFe=1.7 in number with respect to the cosmic value (as for Anders & Grevesse 1989) is measured, if the (not directly visible) illuminating spectrum is assumed to be that measured by BeppoSAX. If th...

X–ray spectra transmitted through Compton–thick absorbers

The presence of large amount of “cold” (i.e. not much ionized, and substantially opaque in X–rays) matter around Active Galactic Nuclei is now a well established fact. For all Seyfert 2 galaxies observed in X–rays so far there is evidence for absorption in excess of the Galactic one. In a significant fraction of them, the column density of the absorbing matter exceeds 10 cm−2 (Maiolino et al. 1...

The iron K line complex in NGC 1068: implications for X-ray reflection in the nucleus

We report a new analysis of ASCA data on the iron K line complex in NGC 1068. The line complex basically consists of three components, as previously reported. A weak red wing of the 6.4 keV fluoresence iron K line is found. A plausible explanation is Compton scattering in optically thick, cold matter which can be identified with an obscuring torus or cold gas in the host galaxy. We also show th...

Unfolding X-ray spectrum in the diagnostic range using the Monte Carlo Code MCNP5

Introduction: Unfolding X-ray spectrum is a powerful tool for quality control of X-ray tubes. Generally, the acquisition of the X-ray spectrum in diagnostic radiology departments is complicated and difficult due to high photon flux. Measurement of x ray spectra using radiation detectors could not be performed accurately, because of the pulse pile up. Therefore, indirect methods...
